The locals are terribly proud of their city and understandably so (they often treat Moscow with a certain level of disdain because it isn't nearly as artistically and architecturally beautiful as their beloved Petersburg). The main sites are walkable (stick to the Nevsky Prospekt and Gostiniy Dvor area and you'll have a lot of things to see). There are plenty of things to do in St. Petersburg - lots of old churches to visit, museums to see and palaces to take pictures of. In fact, the city basically glows during the night so you can literally go to any corner of the city centre and take incredible photos. Let's begin with the obvious: Touristy attractions: 1) Nevsky Prospekt (Невский проспект): this is one of St. Petersburg's main streets and during the summer it is always teeming with life, night and day. I have never felt unsafe in this area, even after going back home at 5am in the morning: there are always people sitting in cafes and having an early breakfast after a night out, or people streaming out of their homes to go to work. The street glitters at night and it looks stunning. Along this street you will find hotels, cafes, shops and generally everything that makes St. Petersburg such a bustling, attractive city. 2) Dumskaya (Думская улица): this is St. Petersburg's main clubbing area. It is packed with many clubs and bars and young people like to go there over the weekend to party and let themselves loose. In my experience, the atmosphere here has always been pleasant, energetic and generally positive. 3) Gostiniy Dvor (Гостиный двор): a massive shopping complex in the heart of the city, filled with luxurious brands for those with great taste. The architecture is also very quaint, so it is worth a peek even if you're not planning on buying anything. It is basically St. Petersburg's "GUM", if anyone has been there in Moscow. Another nice mall which is located really close to the centre is Galeria (Галерия), although this caters more for the middle class rather than the outwardly rich. I like going to Galeria for a cup of coffee or to chill after a long day. 4) Metros: This isn't a tourist destination per se, but if this is your first time in Russia and you have never entered a metro station, then shame on you, because St. Petersburg (alright, alright, Moscow too) has some of the most stunning metro architecture in the world. Here is my own photo of Narvskaya's metro station. I mean, seriously, what the heck. 5) Mariinsky Theatre (Мариинский театр): This is St. Petersburg's main theatre, and they often showcase world class ballets and operas at decent prices. Please go and spend an evening there if you can, there is no other experience quite like it. People here dress to the nines and seeing incredible performances is absolutely worth it. I watched two ballets here: Swan Lake (a classic performance) and Alice in Wonderland (a modern theatrical adaptation of the story). Both were mind-blowing. You can see why I went twice. If opera and ballet is your thing, please consider visiting Mikhailovsky Theatre as well. 6) Summer Garden (Летний сад), Mikhailovsky Garden (Михайловский сад) and Field of Mars (Марсово поле) Because the last thing you want to miss is this. St. Petersburg is also the greenest city in Russia, with over 200 parks, so there are definitely plenty of places to go. 7) Aleksandrovskiy sad (Александровский сад) I've had many a picnic here: 8) Palace Bridge One of my favourite things to do was to walk along the river bank at night, eating a hot dog sold by vendors on the street and watch the Palace Bridge being drawn, glittering in the night sky. There are very few experiences quite like it. Historical sites: Now we have arrived at the really juicy bits: St. Petersburg's historical sites. St. Petersburg is rich with history, seeing as the city was founded by Peter the Great himself and is home to a great number of world-famous palaces, Orthodox churches and museums. Locals are extremely proud of this, and a lot of them will give tour guides a run for their money - I don't think I have seen this many young people so knowledgeable about the history of their city, and the historical significance of the many sites that dot their urban paradise. I am not going to be able to explain the history of every single site out there, not because I'm too lazy/tired to do so (although I probably am), nor because it is really late over here (because it is), but because I am going to have to write an entire book to describe everything right. Here is a small list of St. Pete's historical sites to whet your appetite: 1) Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood (Церковь Спаса на Крови) There is a reason why EVERYONE going to St. Petersburg should see this church: It is literally on every picture of St. Petersburg on your Google Image search. It is directly perpendicular to Nevsky Pospekt so every Tom, Dick and Harry walks past it while exploring the city. It is just so freaking gorgeous. Don't try to argue with me on this. Your parents/friends/pet cat would probably murder you in cold blood if you come back from St. Petersburg without a picture of this thing. IMO it is one of those things you HAVE to see when you visit St. Petersburg, else you shouldn't even say you've been at all. There are often some great musicians (accordion players, singers etc.) dotting the area, so just take a small stroll and listen to great music. I have been told not to give money to them though, although I so very much want to. 2) Hermitage (Эрмитаж) Actually, scratch everything I've said before. If you want to prove that you've really been to St. Petersburg, this is the place you need to be. The State Hermitage museum is one of the oldest and largest museums in the world, with over three million paintings on display (the largest collection in the world). The museum is by the river and occupies a lot of historic buildings, including the Winter Palace and a massive square (young people like to sit here on night walks). Each room in the museum is lavishly decorated and you will need more than a day to go through it all. 3) Petergof (Петергоф) Okay, now I am cheating a little. This isn't in the urban area of St. Petersburg per se, but it is easily reachable by bus with a very small fare (200 rubles if I'm not wrong, although I don't remember that well now). You need to spend a full day in the place to explore the palace in its entirety - it is filled with well-kept gardens, golden fountains and majestic palace interiors. Also, in this town you get to see the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, which was bombed and rebuilt if I'm not mistaken, and I will add a picture of that below. (I also made a fool of myself filming an ad while dancing in a blue man's suit here, but that is beside the point.) 4) St. Isaac's Cathedral (Исаакиевский Собор) TBH I don't even remember what I saw in this Cathedral. I'm pretty sure I spent more time in the square/gardens in front of it than I did inside. But still, it is a majestic building, and very much worth seeing. 5) Kazan Cathedral (Казанский кафедральный собор) This is quite a nice building but I don't remember seeing anything in it that wowed me (since everything in St. Petersburg wowed me, this one probably wowed me a little less). Still, this is still worth seeing, particularly because it is along Nevsky Prospekt and hence very central. People also like to hang out here because of the beautiful lawn. 6) Yusupov Palace (Дворец Юсуповых на Мойке) A great place to spend a few hours. 7) Marble Palace (Мраморный дворец) Well worth a quick visit on the way to the big gardens (Summer Palace, Mikhaylovsky Garden, Field of Mars) 8) Anna Akhmatova Museum (Музей Анны Ахматовой) Last, but not least, I would recommend going to the Anna Akhmatova museum. You can go through it in about an hour and a half. I am a huge fan of her poetry and they do have frequent readings at the museum. Compared to the other cultural giants of St. Pete, this museum does seem small at not noteworthy at first glance, but in my honest opinion it was well worth the visit. Eateries Oh dear, I've rambled on so much about the touristy attractions that I forgot to mention the food places that I frequented that were not often visited by foreigners. Here is a quick list of some of them (and boy, were there many!) 1) Teremok (Теремок) Not exactly a place per se, this is basically a chain of Russian fast food that serves great bliny for a cheap price. They also have syrniki, which I love. 2) Kroshka Kartoshka (Крошка Картошка) Another good Russian fast food chain. This one serves pel'meni, so I do sometimes switch between the two for a quick meal. 3) Chainaya Lozhka (Чайная Ложка) This is a great cafe/canteen chain that sells all kinds of salads, soups and teas. Perfect for a cheap lunch. 4) Циферблат Probably the most incredible cafe (or anticafe) in St. Petersburg, and that is saying something. It is a bit difficult to get to since you have to know where to go. The cafe is located on an apartment building and you have to ring the bell for them to let you in. The best thing about Циферблат is that you get to have as many biscuits, tea and coffee you want, on the condition that you pay for the time you spend in the place. The cafe also comes well stocked with cushions, sofas, board games and books. This becomes a very cost-effective way to spend a quiet afternoon sleeping, coming up with creative work (a lot of artists frequent this place) or having a nice chat with friends. 5) The Green Room Located in rooftop of the Etagi art centre (this is in itself worth a visit especially if you are into grungy contemporary art), the Green Room is a funky, eco-friendly loft where you can meet up with friends, have some incredible plov or manty or greek salad, have a good cuppa to think and relax. The decor is - like pretty much everything in St. Petersburg, it seems - absolutely stunning, and on a warm day you may opt to sit on the roof to bask in the sunlight. This is where most Rusisan students flock to, because of its great food and prices. This is by far NOT an exhaustive list of the great places to see in St. Petersburg, but it is nearing 7 in the morning and my fingers are heavy from typing... In short, I would like to say that St. Petersburg is a paradise for those interested in history, culture, art (both funky contemporary art and classic renaissance paintings), nature, music, theatre and style. If you ever manage to visit St. Petersburg, visit for a long time. Live among the locals. In this city, you will soon forget where you come from and where you're going.
